Cultural Festival
What problem would you like to solve?
Awareness, tolerance, and acceptance of other cultures throughout the city. This is especially relevant to the East Asian communities right now.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
When people don’t understand each other’s cultures it can cause clashes. There is a lot of false information causing this, but there are ways that we can open each other’s eyes and reduce the divide across communities.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
Create Cultural festivals throughout the city related to their respective neighborhoods. This could include:
- Food and drink from the culture of that specific neighborhood and also vendors or information about where to get more.
- The cultural relevance of different dishes. What's locally grown in their originating areas. Recipe cards to take home. Samples to try out
- Education about animals/insects that also have a connection to the fruits and vegetables
- Learn about general flora and fauna in those other areas
- Museums could bring artifacts, or rather replicas/prints of significant items
- Arts & Crafts events, showing how cultural items can be made
- Information about Cultural practices
- Information about Geography, religion, how different cultures deal with death, holidays
- Information about differences within different regions of similar cultures
- Information about important people from a culture, such as scientists, artists, inventors
- Clothing, which could simply be vendors or even a fashion show, history and uses of garb
- Multiple forms of entertainment, such as dance, film, animation, folklore, games
- Storytelling from older generations
- Language instruction
- Information in multiple languages, including braille and ASL, to help bring more people together
- Neighborhood tours: Groups could take walks, talking about the history and significance of the people in that neighborhood. They can also tell people about local businesses.
- A Passport stamp book could be made with a different stamp at each festival to encourage people to want to visit multiple
- A guidebook to where people can find more information about things like language classes, stores, restaurants, museums and neighborhood events
- Schools could use these events as an opportunity for their students to learn more as well, potentially incorporating written reports
- Free buses for seniors to attend
- Citizenship/NYC Id information booths
- Composting/recycling information to help spread awareness of this to other cultures
- An easy way to have other city-run projects be advertised
These events could be tied to various heritage months as well.
Who would that help?
This would help basically everyone. Communities will be brought together more as they participate in the event. People outside of the community will get to know other people, hopefully reducing tensions in some places. Also patronage of local businesses that more people are being made aware of will continue to help areas long after events take place.
These events could also draw more tourists.
