What problem would you like to solve?
Poverty, Truancy & inequity
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
Poverty elevates a child’s risk of experiencing behavioral, social and emotional and health challenges. Child poverty also reduces skill-building opportunities and academic outcomes, undercutting a young student’s capacity to learn, graduate high school and more. 12% of residents of Canarsie live below the Federal Poverty Level; the district’s poverty rate is half the Brooklyn average. according to a recent study. Ending the cycle of poverty in our underserved communities especially in communities of color begins with investing in our children, beginning with maternal health and continuing into early childhood and beyond. Ensuring that the physical, emotional, mental and social needs of these children are met would create a better and safer community where everyone gets a fair chance.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
Where Loves Wins is a project aimed at providing a safe space for our marginalized children ages 0 to 13, in the Canarsie, East Flatbush and portions of Brownsville section of Brooklyn, a place where these children who are experiencing hardships can have access to food, clothing, shelter, school supplies, baby supplies . While taking care of the physical needs this project is geared towards providing mentorship as a means of helping these children as they grow up, to become informed and valuable citizens, empowerment training would be an important part to help them in building their self esteem and know their worth. Anger and conflict management classes would be a major part of this project, which is an important tool needed to avert crime and violence in out communities. We also seek to provide Etiquette skills, Music education and recreation center a place where they can come in, be fed, empowered and safety is sure.
