Breastfeeding Education and Workshops
What problem would you like to solve?
There are severe disparities in breastfeeding rates: more formula is pushed to Black women than white women, Black women wean earlier than white mothers, Black babies are more likely to be born premature, too small and too early and breastmilk will help decrease the infant mortality rate. Black women will benefit from breastfeeding such as lower risk of ovarian and breast cancers. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death of women in the United States.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
So important because providing human milk, which is the optimal nutrition for human babies, sets up a future where people are healthier, have more secure attachments, and lower the risk of a range of ailments.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
- Prenatal breastfeeding class - Lactation counselors staffed at pediatrician offices - Semi-private and private places for mothers and lactating people to feed their children or pump their milk.
Who would that help?
First-time breast feeders in marginalized communities (Black, Latinx, AANHPI, Indigenous)
What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?
The Bronx
