Expansion of Adult Education at NYPL
What problem would you like to solve?
Lack of free classes for adults to learn and develop skills and interests, and a need for neighborhood centers where people can meet each other and gather.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
Free adult classes can equalize access to hobbies and skills for New Yorkers of all income levels. Additionally, it can create a stronger social bond and community buy-in for participants, particularly if located at a local library branch which is frequented by people living in that particular neighborhood. It represents an opportunity bring people of different backgrounds, including racial and economic backgrounds, together.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
Currently some library branches offer language conversation or technology classes or resume workshops Specialized branches may offer financial literacy and creative classes. This idea would build off of the existing infrastructure to expand existing offerings across the NYPL, bringing financial literacy to all branches for example, or parent/baby classes, language, games like bridge or mah jongg, creative writing, history. It could also offer opportunities for neighbors to suggest and vote on what classes they would like -- much in the spirit of participatory budgeting. Perhaps we could use ranked choice voting to do this, which would also educate folks on the process that will be used for NYC primaries.
Who would that help?
All NYC adults in Manhattan!
What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?
Manhattan
