Guided Housing for the Homeless - Valerie Nicholson
What problem would you like to solve?
I'd like to attempt to fill the gap between brokers, landlords and potential tenants(homeless).
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
The time spent in shelters is increasing, shelter staff do not foster hope, residents are not held accountable to any standard and become stuck in the system.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
Create an office of realtor liaisons specifically to find & educate landlords and a department of DHS that ONLY processes cityfheps, EHV & section 8 paperwork, inspections and payments. These departments need to be funded and staffed by dedicated employees CHOSEN for the task and not housed within other departments.
Consider hiring and training some of the very people it serves, or has served. Who better to understand the necessity and have the care to perform the task properly.
Who would that help?
It would help scores of homeless people, underserved populations, the city in general, DHS staff. By becoming more efficient, removing previous obstacles i.e. delayed payments, pro-longed inspections ... Streamlining services that currently overload the current staffing that has nothing in place to assist program participants in finding and securing apartments. Nor to deal with the blatant unlawfulness of the brokers that are skirting showing apartments to program participants by placing them on their "waiting list".
What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?
Brooklyn
