Improve Stormwater Management, Health & Sustainability of City with Green Roofs
What problem would you like to solve?
There are a number of problems the city is faced with that a widespread adoption of green roofs can address:
- Stormwater management
- Urban heat island effect
- Carbon capture (sequestration)
- Air quality (particle matter in air that leads to health issues)
- Extends roof longevity
- Building energy efficiency (high cost of heating/cooling buildings)
- Habitat for native birds and insects
- Noise reduction
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
With climate change intensifying the storms and heat we experience in the city, green roofs are a hugely underutilized tool to combat the devastating effects of climate change on multiple levels. There is a massive opportunity in New York City to improve the landscape and health of the city with a widespread adoption of green roofs. Green roofs have numerous benefits for residents, the local ecology and the city with very little downside.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
We have designed an innovative green roof framework, specifically for the open restaurant program as a starting place, that can be created in a "kit-of-parts" manner for the city to provide to restaurants to increase the presence of green roofs in the city at street level. When we bring green roofs to street-level, it makes it a top-of-mind solution for New York to go green on a widespread level.

Who would that help?
Everyone! This idea was designed to address all -- residents, businesses, nature -- with the incredibly positive impact of green roofs.
What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?
All! This idea can and should be adopted everywhere.
