Hire Officer(s) to Enforce Parking Placards
What problem would you like to solve?
Parking placard abuse is a well-documented problem in New York City, with drivers using both legal and illegal parking placards improperly, blocking traffic lanes, parking spots, bus lanes, bike lanes, fire hydrants, sidewalks, "daylighted" parts of streets (created for safety reasons), etc. However, those currently responsible for enforcing placard violations do not have the capacity (or interest) to do so.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
Illegally parked vehicles create a hazard to all road users. Further, abuse of placards signals that some New Yorkers are above the law.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
With funding from PB, New York City could hire even just one officer with the sole responsibility of enforcing violations of parking placards. (Of course hiring more officers would be even better.) While the goal would be to reduce/eliminate violations and increase safety, until that goal is reached this position could be revenue-generating, offsetting the expense of this position.
Who would that help?
This would help all law-abiding New Yorkers by making our streets safer, and restoring faith in our government by reinforcing that nobody is above the law. While this form is forcing me to select just one borough, this is needed in all five boroughs.
