- Limited English Speakers
- Describe the challenge you want to address:
- An issue we see within our community is the fact that a large portion of people do not have a good grasp of English. Given that English proficiency is important for a number of things, like applying for jobs, asking for directions, scheduling appointments, and even buying groceries or other products, it is important that all people are able to at least have conversational fluency.
- What is the solution to the challenge?
- To overcome the issue, NYC could offer a program that teaches English to limited English speakers for free (both online and in-person) and provide translators who could accompany people to help them with certain tasks. Examples such as filling out paperwork (such as taxes and job applications), help them purchase goods and services, and accompany them on appointments, such as healthcare checkups and scans to help bring awareness to any illnesses or help people with limited English skills ask questions about their health, or in general . . .
