- Describe the challenge you want to address:
- Hearing-impaired youth often face various hurdles that take a toll on their physical and mental health. They might not receive adequate accommodations in school and could miss out on opportunities for higher education or employment. They may experience bullying, heightened self-consciousness, and social isolation due to a limited ability to communicate fully with their peers. Living in a shelter might exacerbate these problems further because they lack the stable, living situation and adult presence that typically provides children and adolescents with physical and emotional support, built-in social interaction, and access to appropriate medical care, such as hearing aids. Hearing-impaired youth in shelters might have additional difficulty connecting with other youth, in the shelter or with staff. whatever situation they experienced that led to living in a youth shelter, could have a psychological impact on them as well, namely, high risk of mental illness, emotional and behavioral problems, self-harm, and substance abuse.
- Describe your idea and approach to address the challenge:
- Ensuring that younger individuals with disabilities in the shelter system have comprehensive support is crucial to preventing, psychological distress and improving physical and mental well-being. Accessible community events can be held at our nearby shelters in different parts of Queens. We are those with disabilities who are facing mental health challenges and can receive health resources from social services agencies. They can speak with social worker or other train staff who can guide them to necessary care, such as medical treatment or disability accommodation. Workshops can be held during the events that focus on specific issues, such as drug addiction, emotional wellness, and accessibility, and can be targeted towards youth. these workshops/events can be conducted monthly, each in a different part of Queens so that the entire borrow is covered over the course of the year.
