- Describe the challenge you want to address:
- "Obviously unemployment is going to be an issue in a city as big as New York, but sometimes it feels like the problem lies with connecting individuals with potential employment opportunities. Also, there are some skills that an individual can learn to make them more hirable, but the classes/trainings/workshops to develop these skills are oftentimes expensive and take a lot of time to complete. "
- Describe your idea and approach to address the challenge:
- "Our idea is to have the city fund different trainings/workshops for a variety of different skills– whether it is tech/computer training, coding, OSHA/flagging, CDL, etc. In order to make sure people who need this resource the most can access it, the individuals who take the training would receive a stipend in addition to daily metro cards if the workshop is in-person. Also, the funds would cover the various fees for these trainings for example, it can cost ~$200 to get OSHA certified. For the last week or so of the workshop, the participants would get help writing their resumes and developing their interview skills. Then, at the end of the workshop, individuals would get paired/matched with a paid internship or employment opportunity one of our ideas was to have companies either get a tax break for hiring people from these workshops, and/or giving them an insurance bond of some sort so that they feel more safe taking a risk on a more untraditional hire. We also suggested advertising these workshops in unemployment offices/neighborhoods with high unemployment rates, so that people who would benefit from these trainings actually know they’re happening.
